You know how some pictures on oppo are small and some are big? You know how the big ones are usually on posts that are really cool? This is not an accident

I know, right? Yeah, we mods decide which images get the treatment and while we like doing it, we don’t get to do it as often as we like, as a result Oppo looks like some kind of photo booth picture roll with the occasional IMAX experience thrown in for good measure. Wouldn’t it be cool if more stories were more bigger? I think so.

Here’s what I’m thinking, On Feb 15, 16th and 17th, post your best content! Content that deserves an embiggening and make Oppo great again remember how awesome Oppo is.

As you probably have guessed, this isn’t so much about us just deciding to make the pictures bigger, its a challenge to product content that’s worth embiggening. I think there are a lot of great things Oppo does, but one thing it used to do really well, but not as much of lately is produce really front page worthy content.

A cool story

A researched topic on tech

A photo or shoot with a story that takes a little work

Anything cool you’ve thought about writing about but have been putting off.

I think we lost a lot of that in the great Jalopnik divorce and I think it would be cool to see more of it.

A few ground rules, if were going to do this:

1. No theme days. Don’t.

2. A quality shitpost deserves credit where it’s due, but if you want it embiggened don’t be lazy and don’t just post a picture someone else did and call it good.

3. The rules of Oppo still very much apply. Posts and comments. If we are going to have people work hard on topics, we have to respect their efforts and not shit on them if we don’t agree. On the same page, don’t post something intentionally inflammatory, It’ll get trashed

4. You can recycle, but only if you really feel it’s necessary, I would much rather have fresh and interesting Oppo content, wouldn’t you?

5. Keep the topics germane - you can write about things that fly, float drive or anything that you feel is in the oppo wheelhouse but no unrelated politics please.

6. No theme days. Don’t just see what other people are doing and jump on the bandwagon.

7. I will repost this with suitable frequency before the day/week so people are kept in the know, but if people post complaining about stuff or ask what’s going on, don’t be a dick about it, just link this post.

8. There are going to be opportunities here to mess with this idea that I can’t foresee; Understand that the mods have discretion to do what’s necessary outside of these spelled out rules to keep troublemakers from spoiling the party. We can also simply turn off the party if it gets out of hand.

9. Don’t steal stuff. Don’t lie. Duh.

The thing is, this isn’t a request for me to see more pretty pictures on Oppo, i think it’s a really cool opportunity to tackle that project or story you’ve been thinking about, or to kickstart the juices on a line of thought you previously hadn’t considered.

You all probably know me well enough by now to know that I like writing for Oppo, even though the pay stinks. I’m hopeful that this small “reward” is incentive enough to see more of the kinds of content that I think makes this one of the cooler places on the internet.

As a side note: I will be making this day public to Patrick George and his ilk at Jalopnik, as you know many a front page author started here in Oppo. I’m not even hinting that this is some kind of recruitment campaign (because it’s not even close to that) but if it helps you get motivated to write to know that people who have money to spend on talented freelance writers may be watching then all the better. I figure this is good for us like its good for them.

I could be in. I have the NASA Social on 2/12 at Edwards AFB and there is bound to be some cool pics.

The big divorce has hurt. I had a few things I worked on but the front page. I think those views helped get me into the NASA Social. Kind of a bummer that is no longer an opportunity.

Thanks for this post! I’ve been wondering about how thumbnail sizes are determined, but never got around to asking. Do headlines work in a similar way? I’ve seen some post titles get large text, but without the enlarged thumbnail.

When I was on Sonic Owners Fourms there was a monthly photo challenge. You had too take a photo of your car in front of an exp: old red brick building. It was monthly & the winner got a sticker, tee shirt, hat, key or key chain. The winner was determined via a poll. It was on on thread there, but could use a tag here like “March Photo Challenge.” It people out driving & it was quite fun. That be fun to do here.

Arguably one of my favorite things about O&E. Not much shitposting/filler and that it’s not for profit or publishing sponsored stories means almost ALL the content is worth a sit-down read-through. Sometimes twice.

It was interesting, some went very far. There was also the typical cheap mod people too. One user went full put on a mid trim 1.8L, turbo, coilovers, lsd, etc. There were lots of owners who stayed stock, but all they posted was DIY wrenching & went into lots of detail.

I would love to read a bit about world rally and offroad truck level suspension with the level of research and thought you put into all your other articles. Triple spring setups, adjustable hydraulic bump stops, position sensitive damping. Maybe a good look into what different damping, compression, rebound, spring weights, etc. do to the big picture... Damper technology has grown every bit as fast as tire tech over the last twenty years, but it seems to get talked about a lot less outside of specific circles.

Just a thought!

This is a neat idea. I didn’t read your wall of text (sorry), but I do remember when Kinja first rolled out, and the expressed purpose was to encourage people to create more meaningful posts. And it worked! But then they dumbed it down and we were right back to where we were before. As you know, I’ve been striving to do this for more than three years now, at least twice a week, and I’d do more if I had the time (pretty busy right now). But folks need to realize that the writing tools on Kinja are really quite good (I do all of my writing inside Kinja). So yeah, give us your best shot! I look forward to reading some more meaningful content, and I will continue to provide as much as I can.

(BTW, there is a way that we can all embiggen our own photos, but I’m not going to share it.)

It’s the opposite of Kinja crop, essentially the whole picture, small. I’ve seen a post before the em-big-N and was cropped, clicked through and full size, then later scrolled through and was bigger on Oppo main page.

I’m in! I’ve been thinking about writing an Opporeview of my Twingo for a while. Besides that I have a few cool ideas for in- depth stories, so I’ll see what I end up with.

I really like this idea, hopefully it shows people how Oppo can also be, and can return it to the days were a healthy amount of the posts were interesting reads.

To be sure, that’s happened to me more than once. After three years of writing long posts, I am now in the habit of copying all the text before I hit “schedule.” It’s saved my ass a couple of times. But I’ve also had to take screen shots of the gray text and then retype.

Sometimes, though, if the screen freezes when saving, you can open a new tab or window, click Compose, and then, when it asks if you want to recover your last post, say yes, and it will all be there. I’ve been bailed out by that a number of times as well.

Whoa, are you able to select any picture from the post to embiggen as a thumbnail? That’s pretty cool.

I noticed a side effect, though. It seems that my Initial Doug post has gotten locked into displaying one particular image as the thumbnail. I had been refreshing the post, putting the latest image at the top, but the thumbnail doesn’t update to reflect that. I guess whoever embiggened it likes Porsche Caymans haha.

If I embiggen a picture, its usually landscape so it doesn’t eat up the vertical layout. thats probably why.

Huh. I didn’t know vertical thumbnails were even possible. I thought everything was forcefully cropped by Kinja (except for social media embeds).
